Software and Robotic Systems Engineer

As the sole software developer on a small team, the Software and Robotic Systems Engineer position calls for someone with proven experience in the complete software lifecycle and a deep understanding of a variety of disciplines. At a high level, you will be working on software that controls robotic liquid handling systems and gives users an easy-to-use interface for defining molecular assay procedures with complex timing requirements. Our robots incorporate microcontrollers, stepper motors, fluid pumps, mechanical switches, optical sensors, and electrochemical sensing contacts. The software system surrounding the robot is implemented entirely in Python, a language you must have a strong love for to succeed.

The nature of the work environment requires that you have broad interests but can narrow your focus to the task at hand. You should be as interested in designing and building UIs as you are in writing low-level operation APIs for new electromechanical components.

Required Skills and Experience

  • B.S. or M.S. in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • You’re an expert at Python
  • You have years of experience as a professional software developer
  • Experience with the full stack from low-level hardware communication up to complex GUIs including workflows and data visualization
  • You can’t sleep at night unless you’ve written reliable, complete tests and have documented your code
  • Experience building UIs (GTK+, Qt, etc.) and web interfaces, as well as developing and documenting APIs.
  • You can write command line tools for building and testing.
  • Familiarity with version control tools (SVN, Git, etc.)
  • A thorough understanding of software development lifecycle and best practices
  • You understand the importance of code refactoring

Also required; experience with one or more of the following:

  • Microcontrollers and embedded systems (ARM, AVR)
  • Serial interfaces including USB, RS232, and RS485.
  • Knowledge of electromechanical assembly techniques including soldering, crimping, tools, and fasteners

    • You can write C code that interfaces with Python

    Mechanical/Automation Engineer

    Design, prototyping, and validation of automated electromechanical systems is central to this work. We are seeking a highly talented and motivated mechanical/automation Engineer with experience in design and development of electromechanical systems, including hands-on prototyping and validation. The ideal candidate will have experience in software-aided design of electromechanical assemblies including mechanical components and actuators, design for manufacturing (DFM), and use of rapid prototyping equipment including 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC mills.

    This position will be primarily hands-on with key responsibilities in the area of product development, validation, and documentation. The Engineer will collaborate with other team members on the design, prototyping, and testing of GeneFluidics’ microfluidic cartridge system and robotic automation modules. The Engineer’s project responsibilities include preparation of a microfluidic cartridge assembly for manufacturing and scaling up of production. Hands-on work will include validation of systems using biological assays, and documentation and presentation of progress and test results.

    Required Skills and Experience

    • B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field
    • At least 3 years of experience in product development or manufacturing
    • Experience with laser cutting, CNC equipment, 3D printing
    • Experience operating laboratory equipment and automation
    • Experience with collaborative tools such as version control systems and wikis
    • Expert-level skills in CAD software (Solidworks)
    • Demonstrated ability to produce clear documentation of designs, processes and results

    Engineer Intern – Part-Time

    We are seeking a highly talented and motivated Intern with experience in electromechanical systems, including hands-on prototyping and validation. The ideal candidate will have experience in software-aided design of electromechanical assemblies including mechanical components and actuators, and be skillful with rapid prototyping equipment including 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC mills.

    This position will be primarily hands-on with key responsibilities in the areas of prototype design, construction, and testing. The Intern will collaborate with other team members on the design, production, and validation of GeneFluidics’ microfluidic cartridge system and robotic automation modules. The Intern’s responsibilities include assisting in preparation of a microfluidic cartridge assembly for manufacturing and scaling up of production. Hands-on work will include prototyping and assembly of microfluidic cartridges and systems, critical analysis and validation using biological assays, and documentation and presentation of progress and test results.

    Desired Skills and Experience

    • Ongoing or recently-completed B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field
    • Experience with laser cutting, CNC equipment, 3D printing, casting
    • Experience with collaborative tools such as version control systems and wikis
    • Proficiency in CAD software (Solidworks)

    Production/Facility Technician

    Production and quality testing of electrochemical sensor chips and refinement of the associated processes is central to this work. We are seeking a highly talented and motivated Technician with experience in industrial and laboratory equipment, cleanroom processes, and chemical handling. The ideal candidate will have experience in sputter deposition equipment, use of general laboratory equipment and labware including pipettors, centrifuges, and mixers, quality control and management practices, equipment troubleshooting, and cleanroom techniques. The candidate for this position must be detail-oriented, willing to adapt to change, have good communication and organizational skills. The ideal candidate must also have a general science background and possess skills associated with use of industrial and laboratory equipment.

    This position will be primarily hands-on with key responsibilities in the area of product manufacturing, equipment maintenance, and process troubleshooting. The successful candidate must be a team player and a self-starter. Laboratory procedures may involve handling biological samples including, blood, saliva, and urine, so the Technician should be comfortable and familiar with procedures involving these samples. The Technician will be involved in hands-on aspects of electrochemical sensor chip manufacturing including measuring, cleaning, and preparing raw materials including chemical reagents, operating sputtering machines, performing visual and quantitative quality assurance procedures, and be responsible for carrying out all procedures under strict quality control guidelines. Other responsibilities include performing data analysis and preparing data presentations with Microsoft Office tools, as well as creating and following standard operating procedures.

    Required Skills and Experience

    • B.S. degree or 3 years of work experience in a technical field
    • Experience operating laboratory equipment such as pipettors, mixers, and centrifuges
    • Experience with molecular assay techniques (ELISA, Western blotting, etc)
    • Familiarity with safe practices for handling biological specimens
    • Familiarity with quality management systems or regulations (ISO, cGMP, GLP)
    • Demonstrated success in hands-on roles
    • Experience working independently to meet production milestones
